Symbols

Flower: American Beauty Rose

Open Motto: Diokete Hupsala - Aim High

Colors: King Blue and Gold

Stone: Sapphire

Twin Ideals: The brotherhood of man and the alleviation of the world's pain.

Official Hymn: Liebestraum

Symbol: Sphinx

Local Mascot: Lion

FYI: The Fraternity symbols were chosen because they appealed to the Founders. Shirley Cohen Laufer chose the Sphinx because it is a mythological figure of mystery and secrecy for women. The American Beauty Rose was selected because of its statuesque beauty, and the balance of its sharp thorns and soft petals. Fay Chertkoff, Gwen Zaliels Snyder, and Estelle Melnick Cole literally locked themselves in a room together to write the first ritual. Gwen Zaliels Snyder designed the familiar sapphire-eyed Sphinxhead pin.

The first National Song was called "The Hymn" and was written by Pearl S. Lippman (Alpha, '21) and her husband, Arthur. Our official hymn, the Liebestraum, is based on Franz Liszt's original composition, Liebestraume.

Why Join?
What are the benefits of joining a national sorority?

Phi Sigma Sigma belongs to the National Panhellenic Conference (npcwomen.org), an umbrella organization for 26 national and international women's fraternities and sororities. Members are represented on over 630 college and university campuses in the United States and Canada and in over 5,300 alumnae associations, comprising over 3 million sorority women in the world. Member groups work jointly to offer women opportunities for valuable social interaction during and beyond their college years, and sponsor programs on academic excellence, shared values, health, and other issues of importance to women.
Membership in a national sorority like Phi Sigma Sigma is supported through a system of resources. This includes support from staff at Central Office as well as dedicated advisors and alumnae volunteers who assist sisters with academics and personal challenges, national programs and chapter administrative functions. After graduation, local alumnae groups ensure that wherever a Phi Sigma Sigma moves she will have a network of sisters to rely on.

What makes Phi Sigma Sigma unique?

Each of our chapters establishes a judicial board to govern membership. While chapter judicial boards are required to follow our National policies and recommendations, and campus rules and regulations, each chapter judicial board functions independently, with support and assistance from our national personnel. We believe this distinct feature encourages our women to make decisions together and individually, which in turn fosters additional personal growth.
We welcome women of all religious backgrounds, cultural beliefs and traditions. No member of Phi Sigma Sigma will ever have to feel uncomfortable participating in our rituals because they are non-sectarian, which encourages our members to embrace the unique qualities of each sister.
Our programming centers on Phi Sigma Sigma's core values. This concept guides members toward greater academic, personal, and professional growth and development during the collegiate years and as alumnae.
